Awase Giant Tag-of-War in Okinawa City, Okinawa

Tag-of-war is a popular traditional event that is held in many areas in Okinawa. Some of the most famous ones are of Naha City, Yonabaru Town, and Itoman City. On the 11th of November 2018, the giant tag-of-war was held for the first time in 5 years in Awase area in Okinawa City.

100m Long and 16t Rope!

Awase area is located on the east edge of Okinawa City and right by the Pacific Ocean. Tag-of-war in most of the areas in Okinawa is held annually, however, in Awase, the last event was held in 2013, and the one before was in 2003; 10 years prior to the last one. In 2018, the giant rope is 100 meter long and weigh 16 tons. The rope is first separated into two parts; east and west (east rope is male and west rope is female). Right before starting the tag-of-war, the ropes are connected by a log called “Kanuchibo”, and become one giant rope.

Enjoy “Michi June-e” Performances

Route 85, also known as “Awase Bay Street” was closed to cars at noon and the street became like a ghost town. As walking toward where the heads of two ropes meet around 2 pm, I started hearing sounds of taiko drums, bells, and conch shell horns. Michi June-e entertainments took place at the intersection near Awase Bijuru Shrine. There were lion dance, taiko drum, ukulele, and eisaa performances. Men in black costumes with blue and red scarves wrapped around their heads were busy getting ready for the main event that would start later that night.

Ready, Get Set, Be Happy!

When I went back to the Bay Street little after 7pm, the street was filled with people and all kinds of sounds. The tag-of-war was already started. A couple of guys in black costumes were standing on top of the giant rope and cheering for their team. 15 minutes later, the rope did not move much to either side. And when they announced the remaining time was 5 minutes, voices got louder and both sides of people started to pull harder. At the end of 30 minute period, neither side pulled the rope more than 2 meters into their side, so it was draw. Still, nobody was mad or depressed, and they both cheered for each other and danced “kachaashii” (traditional Okinawan dance to express joy and happiness) on the rope.

Everybody Gets Connected

Seems like the giant rope has a power to connect everything around it. It connects people of the past and the present day, communities, and everybody who came to see or joined the tag-of-war. The colorful fire works spread in the night sky at the end of the event, and everybody looked happy and satisfied. This year, the giant rope of Awase will be used again during Okinawa International Carnival scheduled on 24 and 25 November 2018 in Okinawa City. I’m sure that there will be more happy faces around the giant rope!
